It is my honor and privilege to serve the residents of Warren as 2020 Mayor. On behalf of the entire Warren Township Committee, I wish you a happy and a healthy New Year. I am pleased to welcome Jolanta Maziarz as our newest member of the Township Committee to serve alongside George Lazo, Gary DiNardo, Vic Sordillo, and myself.
My goals for 2020 are as follows:
To ensure that the Land Use applications for the development for the affordable housing sites are thoroughly and properly reviewed by the Planning Board and their Consultants;
To engage special counsel, traffic consultants, and architects with the proper skills to accurately review these applications.
To develop the 2020 municipal budget with the lowest possible tax rate with the goal of implementing a tax reduction.
To review available land in Warren Township and to utilize the Open Space Trust Fund to purchase and preserve additional Open Space.
The Township Committee has negotiated the best deal possible for our residents. The responsibility to implement this plan and ensure the proper approval of the development applications is now before the Warren Township Planning Board. As Mayor, I will ensure that the Planning Board has the proper staff to thoroughly review the applications and ensure that the developers are compliant with all of the Township rules and ordinances.
In order to limit the number of affordable housing, the Township has been working with PIRHL Developers from Cleveland, Ohio. They have been successful in obtaining $13 million federal tax credit to finance the construction of an 80-unit affordable housing project off Lindberg Avenue and Stirling Road across from Watchung Hills Regional High School. This project will only contain affordable housing units, which will allow us to meet our affordable housing obligations without the need for additional development.
The Township Committee has established an express bus service to the New York Port Authority. Residents who are interested in more information and obtaining permits can contact the Warren Township Clerk’s office.
Warren Township is extremely proud of our emergency services. This includes our Police Department, which consists of 31 officers under the leadership of Chief William Keane, Warren Township OEM, Cert Team, Fire Department and Rescue Squad, all of which ensure the safety of our residents. Volunteerism is also evident in our numerous sports activities, which provide programs for our youth. All of these organizations are always seeking new volunteers.
The Warren Township Committee carefully manages our finances and is extremely proud of the AAA bond rating granted to us by Standard and Poors and Moody’s Investor Services. We carefully plan our budget to ensure the long-term and short-term financial health of Warren.
In 2020, the Recreation Department will be embarking on the dredging of Dealaman Pond in order to maintain the long-term health of Dealaman Park. This is the site of our annual Fishing Derby and it also provides numerous ongoing recreational activates for our residents.
Plans are also being prepared to improve the pavilion at the Municipal Complex, as well as looking at improvements at both the Municipal Complex Playground and Greenwood Meadows Park. Continuing to beautify the Town Center, whether it be through the expansion of our holiday decorations or planting flowers in our islands has been one of my goals to demonstrate our community pride.
I am looking forward to 2020 as I would like to accomplish the primary goals as stated above, and I look forward to working with you to ensure that the Township of Warren remains a special place.
