The Showcase Magazine - Salutes

While the name of the salon might be fancy, you’ll feel welcome and relaxed as soon as you walk in the door. “We’re a very friendly, family-oriented salon,” says Dawn Coffin, the owner of Beverly Hills Hair Studio in Martinsville. “We really pride ourselves on not just doing great hair but making everybody feel comfortable.”

With almost 30 years in the hair industry, she has spent 27 of those in her own salon. “I love owning my own place because I want to do things the right way,” she says. “And I really enjoy meeting new people and making them feel great about themselves. It's also a nice way to connect with people and build relationships.”

Some of her clients have been with her since the salon opened, and she considers many of them friends. Dawn’s clients also include grown children of her original clients and their children.

Most of her stylists have also been with her for many years. They get to know their clients’ likes and dislikes and can advise them on the best styles for their personalities and hair types.

Beverly Hills Hair Studio is a full-service salon, and while they do haircuts for women, men, and children, they also provide other services. “We definitely do a lot of color, and we have a lot of smoothing services for textured hair. We also do curly haircuts.”

One popular treatment is Magic Sleek, a hair smoother/straightener. “It's a bit more permanent than a keratin treatment, and we can control how smooth it gets,” says Dawn. “It’s also a lot healthier for your hair because you won't have to use as much heat or as many products.”

Hair extensions and makeup applications are also available. And, if people want to donate their hair for wigs for children, the salon will handle everything, including the packaging and shipping.

As a Paul Mitchell salon, hair care products such as shampoos, conditioners, texture sprays, deep treatments, gels, and mousses are sold.

“Paul Mitchell gives back to many different charities, and they're invested in the earth as far as sustainability, making cleaner and better products. So is the Kevin Murphy brand that we use. We definitely base our products more on what they're about behind the scenes than what they are on the shelf.”

Another thing that clients appreciate are the simple little touches. There are always cookies and drinks out to enjoy. “A lot of people come in right after work, or after running their kids all over, and it’s nice to have snacks for them.”

Although the atmosphere many be casual, the training is extremely professional. She and her stylists stay on top of all the new techniques, trends and products through continuing education classes.

“Our hair is a part of us,” says Dawn. “It's the first thing people usually notice when they first meet us. You want to feel good about yourself and if your hair looks great, it's easier to feel more confident.”
