In a cut-throat industry like hair and cosmetology (pun intended) how do you stay in business for over 40 years? According to Giovanni Antonelli, owner of Capelli Hair Salon, it’s about making the salon feel like home to its clients. This hasn’t been too hard to do, considering the salon has been Antonelli’s second home for most of his life.
Located in Piscataway, Capelli Hair Salon was established in 1979 by Giovanni’s father, Gino Antonelli, after he immigrated from Italy. Giovanni grew up being part of the family business, which naturally inspired his future. "When I was younger, I thought about developing my career, not just a job. I assisted a stylist and fell in love. Then I studied with the Vidal Sassoon Academy, which assured me that hair is what I wanted to do." Over the next 19 years, he attended countless advanced classes, including Nick Arrojo Razor Cutting, Paul Mitchell, and more. He officially took over Capelli Hair Salon in 2015 to provide Central Jersey clients with the best service and professional hair care products.
Whether you're looking for a beautiful cut, dimensional color, sun-kissed highlights, caramel balayage, an intricate style, extensions, keratin treatment, Japanese thermal straightening, or nail service – Antonelli and his well-rounded staff of 17 are seasoned stylists and masters in their field.
In addition to excellent service and style, Antonelli and his staff always provide clients with a personal touch. "My stylists get to know their clients, their hair texture, the products they use, and why they are coming in, to ensure they are happy with their results," says Antonelli. "At the end of the day, it's a small business. We want clients to be comfortable. It's more than just a haircut."
These business practices have helped to keep clients around for over 40 years. "I have clients say to me, 'Your father cut my hair, and now you're cutting my hair.' Or 'Oh, I remember you walking around here with a bottle in your hand.' That's a cool part of the business – growing with the clients. I've also been cutting clients since they were kids, and now they are getting married!" says Antonelli.
“Hair is my passion, and I strive to make every guest in my chair feel great about their look and experience,” says Antonelli. Stop by the 3,000-square-foot salon to experience Antonelli's personal touches, the great environment of family history, and reasonable prices that have kept generations returning for years. "Come in and give the salon a try. You're going to have a great experience in a beautiful salon!"
Capelli Hair Salon is open Tuesday through Friday from 9am to 8pm, Saturday from 9am to 5pm, and closed on Sunday and Monday. Call (732) 968-7666 to book your appointment today.
P.S. If you’re wondering what happened to Gino, you might just catch him busy at work the next time you stop in the salon. “My father is still coming in occasionally to do extensions at 72 years old – and to provide his son guidance as the business grows," assures Antonelli.
