Eleven years ago, Jennifer D’Avella experienced a spray tan so bad that it became the turning point of her career. After stepping into a self-service tanning booth, she walked out streaked in uneven shades. Instead of swearing off spray tans for good, Jennifer asked a simple question: “Why isn’t there something better?” That question became the foundation of Sun Spray of NJ, Jennifer’s mobile, all-organic spray-tan business, built on comfort, care, and confidence.
Sun Spray of NJ specializes in hypoallergenic, aloe-, fragrance-, oil-, and alcohol-free spray tans that are never orange or sticky, using the highest-quality organic spray solution. Jennifer chose the mobile business model intentionally, wanting to start small and manageable. By bringing the service directly to the clients’ homes, she created a wonderful entrepreneurship. Not having any overhead to worry about really allows Jennifer to be flexible with her schedule and focus on the client's needs.
Jennifer trained in NYC, completing a course focused on spray tanning techniques and chemical education. After earning her certification, she recruited two friends and spent months practicing before booking paying clients. Before opening Sun Spray of NJ, Jennifer was the customer service administrator at Tiffany & Co. Once married, she joined her husband, helping with their long-standing family company, Davella’s Landscaping. Both roles reinforced the importance of building trust and long-term relationships.
Creativity has always played a role in Jennifer’s life. “I love working with color, and after years of experience engaging with people, spray tanning felt like a natural fit,” says Jennifer. Each appointment is fully customized. Jennifer arrives with equipment that carefully protects clients' homes and can be set up in just five minutes. She consults with each client about their event and desired outcome, then custom-blends the client's color to fit their needs. Jennifer will first drop off a scrub made from crushed pecan shells. This gentle exfoliant is oil-free, ensuring an even application for your tan. (Alternative options are available if you have allergies.) Waxing, manicures, and pedicures will be done beforehand. The final step is spray tanning, which costs $70 per tan.
Jennifer’s clients range from 11 to young at heart. Her goal is to help people feel confident for weddings, vacations, special events, or just a night out. What truly sets her apart is how she makes people feel at ease. Jennifer listens closely and cares deeply.
“When I started this side hustle, my son was nine years old. It was important for him to see me follow through with my idea and put myself out there, while still being available to support his activities and help the family business,” says Jennifer. “Sometimes, just stepping out of our
comfort zone and doing something for ourselves—whether it’s getting a massage, attending an exercise class, getting a haircut, or enjoying a great spray tan—can really lift our mood and help combat the winter blues.”
Now serving the areas of Warren, Watchung, Basking Ridge, Green Brook, and the surrounding regions, Jennifer defines success by her clients' happiness. After 11 years, she takes pride in her consistency, resilience, and growth, all while showing her son what it means to follow through.
